Career guide

What is hospitality management?

The work, the skills, the jobs it leads to and what they pay — and an honest answer to whether it's a good career.

Hospitality management is the business of running places that look after guests: hotels, restaurants, resorts, event venues and tourism companies. A hospitality manager leads the team, keeps the operation running and makes sure the numbers work, so guests leave happy and the business stays profitable.

It's part service, part business. On a given day a hotel manager might deal with a complaint at the front desk, a staffing gap in the restaurant and the room rates for next month. That mix is why the field suits people who get bored sitting in one place.

What does a hospitality manager actually do?

The work splits into a few big areas. Most careers start in one and move across:

  • Rooms division: front office, reservations, housekeeping, guest relations. The heart of a hotel.
  • Food and beverage: restaurants, bars, banqueting and room service, often the largest team in a full-service hotel.
  • Revenue and sales: pricing rooms day by day, selling to companies and event organisers, digital marketing.
  • Events: conferences, weddings, corporate events, from the first enquiry to the final invoice.
  • People and finance: recruiting, training, budgets and reporting, the work that moves you toward general management.

What do you study in a hospitality management degree?

Business subjects (accounting, marketing, human resources, strategy) taught through the hospitality industry, plus the operational side: how a front office runs, how a restaurant makes or loses money, how revenue management works. Many programmes add languages. The better ones put you to work in real hotels as part of the degree.

At BHMS in Lucerne, every year of the bachelor is six months of study followed by a six-month paid internship, so the theory meets practice three times before you graduate. Students learn business and hospitality together and only pick between the BA in Hospitality and the BA in Global Business Management in their final year. That's useful if you're not sure yet: by then you've worked for two different companies and know much better what you want. How the three years work.

What can you do with a hospitality management degree?

More than run a hotel. The table shows three manager-level jobs the US Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks, with their 2025 pay and outlook.

Job (BLS)Median pay, May 2025Job growth, 2025–35Usual entry education
Lodging (hotel) manager$69,2504%High school + experience, or a hospitality degree
Food service manager$69,3906%High school + experience
Meeting, convention and event planner$61,1606%Bachelor's degree

Other doors the degree opens, where a guest-first mindset is the job:

  • Revenue manager, sales manager or marketing manager at a hotel or hotel group
  • Corporate roles at hotel chains: operations, HR, training, development
  • Cruise lines, airlines, luxury retail and private clubs

Is hospitality management a good career?

It's a good career for some people and a hard one for others. The honest version:

Why people love it

  • No two days are the same, and you're rarely at a desk all day.
  • It travels: hotels exist in every country, and experience in one is understood in another.
  • Promotion can be fast for people who are good with teams, because operations always need leaders.
  • Steady demand: the BLS projects growth of 4% for lodging managers and 6% for food service managers between 2025 and 2035.

What's hard about it

  • The hours. Evenings, weekends and holidays are normal, especially in your first years.
  • Starting pay is modest; the good money comes with management responsibility.
  • It's people work, all day. If that drains you, it'll show.

A simple test: spend real time working in a hotel or restaurant before you commit years to it. That's one reason the Swiss format alternates study with paid placements. You find out early, and you're paid while you do. At BHMS that's 18 months of placements over the bachelor, at CHF 2'390 a month gross for placements in Switzerland. How the internships work.

Career questions

Straight answers

What is hospitality management in simple words?

It is the business of looking after guests at a profit: running hotels, restaurants, events, resorts and tourism companies so that guests are well looked after and the business makes money. A hospitality manager leads the people, the operations and the numbers behind that.

What can you do with a hospitality management degree?

Work in hotel operations (front office, rooms, food and beverage), revenue management, sales and marketing, events, human resources, or head-office roles at hotel groups. The same skills transfer to cruise lines, airlines, luxury retail, real estate and any business built on service.

Is hospitality management a good career?

For people who like working with others and can live with irregular hours, yes. US BLS data shows median pay of $69,250 for lodging managers and $69,390 for food service managers (May 2025), with jobs projected to grow 4% and 6% respectively from 2025 to 2035. The trade-off is evenings, weekends and holidays, especially early on.

Is hospitality management the same as hotel management?

Hotel management is the biggest part of hospitality management, but not all of it. Hospitality also covers restaurants, events, tourism and the corporate side of hotel groups. Most degrees teach both under one name.

What skills do you need for hospitality management?

Calm under pressure, a genuine interest in people, communication, and a head for numbers. Languages help a lot: in Switzerland, placements depend substantially on German, French or Italian.
