Hotel manager salary: what the data says

US and Swiss figures from the official statistics, not salary-site guesses — and an honest look at what a first job pays.

A hotel manager in the US earned a median of $69,250 a year in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The bottom 10% made under $40,070 and the top 10% over $128,880. In Switzerland, the median full-time wage across the accommodation sector was CHF 4,715 a month in 2024, and senior managers at the top of the scale earn more than CHF 11,487 a month.

Those are the headline numbers. What you'll actually earn depends on the size of the property, the city, your department and, above all, how many years you've already spent running parts of a hotel. Here's the detail.

How much does a hotel manager make in the US?

The BLS files hotel managers under "lodging managers". There were 54,800 of those jobs in 2025, two-thirds of them in hotels and motels and about a fifth self-employed. Hospitality management is wider than hotels, so the table puts the three closest occupations side by side.

Occupation (BLS)Median pay, May 2025Lowest 10%Highest 10%Jobs, 2025
Lodging managers$69,250under $40,070over $128,88054,800
Food service managers$69,390under $45,960over $107,640344,300
Meeting, convention and event planners$61,160——172,100

Within lodging, the median was $67,550 in traveler accommodation (hotels and motels) and $59,330 in RV parks and recreational camps. The BLS expects lodging-manager jobs to grow 4% between 2025 and 2035, about as fast as the average, with around 5,500 openings a year.

Hotel management salary vs hospitality management salary

People search both, and they mean slightly different things. A hotel manager runs a property or a division of it: rooms, front office, food and beverage, revenue. Hospitality management also takes in restaurants, events, tourism and the head offices of hotel groups. In the BLS data the three manager-level occupations above land within about $8,000 of each other at the median. The real spread is inside each one, between a first supervisory job and a general manager's office.

What do hotel managers earn in Switzerland?

Switzerland doesn't publish a separate figure for hotel managers, but two official sources tell you a lot. The Federal Statistical Office's 2024 wage survey gives the sector picture, and the hospitality collective labour agreement (L-GAV) sets the minimum pay that every hotel and restaurant must respect.

Swiss figureGross per monthAbout, in US$
Median, accommodation sector, all roles (2024)CHF 4,715US$5,700
Median, whole Swiss economy (2024)CHF 7,024US$8,500
Top 10% of senior managers, accommodation (2024): aboveCHF 11,487US$13,900
L-GAV minimum, no vocational training (2026)CHF 3,713US$4,500
L-GAV minimum, 3-year apprenticeship (2026)CHF 4,528US$5,500
L-GAV minimum, federal professional exam (2026)CHF 5,293US$6,400

US$ figures at the October 2026 rate (1 CHF ≈ US$1.21), rounded. The L-GAV minimums are monthly for a 42-hour week; holiday pay and a 13th monthly salary come on top. Geneva and Neuchâtel have higher cantonal minimum wages.

Read the table honestly: hospitality is not one of Switzerland's high-wage sectors. The accommodation median sits about a third below the national median. The money is in management, and the jump from staff to senior management is large. Swiss living costs are high too, so a Swiss salary and a US salary aren't comparable one to one.

What decides how much you earn?

  • Size and type of property. A full-service city hotel with restaurants and events needs more managers, and pays them more, than a small limited-service property.
  • Department. General management, revenue management and sales sit at the top of most pay scales; supervisory roles in front office or housekeeping are where most careers start.
  • Location. Pay follows the cost of living, in the US and in Switzerland alike.
  • Experience you can prove. The BLS lists work experience as part of the typical route in. A CV that already shows months in real hotels gets you past the first rung faster.
  • Languages. In Switzerland, German, French or Italian opens doors that English alone doesn't.

Where a student internship fits in

Most people's first hospitality pay comes before graduation. At BHMS in Lucerne, every academic semester is followed by a six-month paid placement. BHMS publishes a trainee salary of CHF 2'390 a month gross (about US$2,900) for placements in Switzerland. That's a trainee rate set in the contract with the employer, not a staff wage, and it's before deductions: BHMS says students typically keep about CHF 1'500 a month where the employer provides room and board, or CHF 800–1,000 in a city without it.

Over the three-year bachelor that adds up to 18 months of paid experience and more than CHF 43'000 gross. The bigger payoff is the CV: you finish with a degree and a year and a half inside real operations, which is exactly what the first management job asks for. If you already hold a degree, the one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Hospitality Management includes one six-month paid placement, and the MSc in International Hospitality Business Management is the route toward management roles. Our sister site Master's Degrees in Switzerland compares all the BHMS master's options.

Is hotel management a well-paid career?

It's a career where pay follows responsibility. Starting wages are modest in most countries, and the hours include evenings, weekends and holidays, which the BLS notes too. Managers who reach general manager, revenue or regional roles earn well, and the skills travel: hotels exist in every country, which few careers can say. If you want to see what BHMS graduates go on to do, the school's own page on careers in hospitality lists the paths.
