The format
What studying hospitality in Switzerland involves
Swiss hospitality education combines classroom semesters with paid hotel internships, taught in English at private hotel management schools. Most schools offer a three-year bachelor's degree, one-year postgraduate diplomas and master's programmes. The defining feature of the Swiss format is alternation: study for six months, then work a real, paid position for six months.
At BHMS in Lucerne — the concrete example this guide uses throughout — the undergraduate route is a ladder of three one-year steps. Year 1 exits with the Diploma in Business & Hospitality Management, Year 2 with the Higher Diploma, and Year 3 with the BA in Hotel & Hospitality Management, awarded jointly with Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen (UK) — 180 ECTS and 360 UK credits in total. Each academic semester is followed by a six-month paid internship, so a graduate leaves with 18 months of industry experience alongside the degree.
Above the bachelor sit a one-year Postgraduate Diploma, a ten-week Graduate Certificate and a one-year MSc. Everything is taught in English; German is not required to enrol, though BHMS says placements inside Switzerland depend very much on your German, French or Italian.
The money
How much hotel school in Switzerland costs
Most premium Swiss hotel schools run CHF 30,000–50,000+ per year once accommodation and meals are counted, and headline tuition alone is not comparable between schools. BHMS publishes all-inclusive 2026 figures: CHF 38,600 for Year 1, rising to CHF 40,500 by Year 3 — about CHF 118,700 across the three-year bachelor.

The fee includes accommodation in a shared 3–4 bed apartment, meals, health insurance, first airport pickup and visa support — not just teaching. Budget about CHF 500 a month on top for personal expenses; BHMS publishes that figure itself.
What comes back
Every academic semester is followed by a six-month paid placement. BHMS publishes CHF 2,390/month gross for internships in Switzerland — more than CHF 43,000 gross across the bachelor's three placements. Net of deductions, BHMS says students typically keep CHF 1,500 a month where the employer provides room and board, or CHF 800–1,000 in a city without it.
That is an offset, not a funding plan: plan your finances on the fee figures. Swiss citizens and C-permit holders receive a 30% tuition reduction on English-taught programmes of at least 12 months.
Getting in
Entry requirements for Swiss hotel schools
To enter a Swiss undergraduate hospitality programme you generally need a completed secondary education, proof of English and a minimum age around 17 or 18. At BHMS: minimum age 17, a high school diploma or equivalent, and IELTS-level English — published as 5.5 on the BA programme page but 5.0 on the central requirements page, so confirm with admissions.
The inconsistency is on BHMS's own site, so this guide will not pick the more flattering number for you. If your English is below the requirement, BHMS runs a Preparatory English Programme; its duration and fees are not published, so ask for them directly.
Postgraduate entry is separate. Postgraduate Diploma: an associate degree plus two years' full-time work experience, or a bachelor's in another discipline, with IELTS 5.0. Graduate Certificate: associate degree plus two years' experience, IELTS 6.0. MSc: an undergraduate degree in any discipline — or a BHMS Postgraduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate — with IELTS 6.0.

The paperwork
Visas and working while studying
Allow 8–12 weeks for Swiss student visa processing if you are a non-EU citizen, and 4–6 weeks if you are an EU citizen. Students who need a visa may not work outside the internships built into their programme — but those internships are permitted, paid and part of the course itself.
Two consequences follow. The visa clock starts only once you hold your Letter of Acceptance, so non-EU applicants should apply four months or more before the intake; visa and administrative support is included in the BHMS fee. And because a side job cannot fill budget gaps, the CHF 500-a-month personal allowance belongs in the family budget from day one — the paid placements are the only earning built into the plan.

How to choose between Swiss hotel schools
Compare schools on structure, not slogans: who actually awards the degree and under which accreditation, what the published fee really includes, whether internships are paid and built into every year, whether each year carries an exit award, and whether any outcome statistic comes with a checkable source. A ranking is one input, not a verdict.
Who awards the degree
A Swiss school may award its own diploma, a foreign university's degree, or both — and that determines how the qualification reads abroad. Ask which body accredits the school and check it at source. BHMS's bachelor and MSc are dual-awarded with Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen (UK) under the QAA framework; its other recognitions include the Institute of Hospitality and eduQua.
What "all-inclusive" really covers
Headline fees are only comparable with the itemised list next to them. Ask each school whether accommodation, meals, health insurance, airport pickup and visa support are inside the figure — and what the expected monthly personal budget is on top. A lower headline fee with rent and insurance excluded can cost more in practice.
Internship terms
The questions that matter: is the internship paid, how many months across the whole programme, is it built into every year or a single optional placement, and does the school publish a salary figure? Ask too whether in-country placement depends on local language skills — at BHMS, Swiss placements depend substantially on German, French or Italian.
City campus or resort campus
Both are legitimate; know which you are buying. A city campus like Lucerne puts employers, placement interviews and everyday life a train ride away. A resort campus is more immersive and more remote — think about the ordinary weekends, not the brochure photograph.

The plan
Timeline: application to arrival
Work backwards from your intake date. A non-EU applicant needs about six months from shortlist to arrival: research and English test around month six, application by month five, acceptance and visa filing by month four, a visa decision within 8–12 weeks, then flights and arrival. EU citizens can compress that to roughly three months.
- 6–5 months out. Shortlist schools using the criteria above. Book and sit your English test if you need a score.
- 5–4 months out. Apply with your school records and English result. Applying costs nothing through this site.
- 4 months out. Letter of Acceptance arrives; the deposit follows it. Non-EU citizens: file the visa application immediately — processing takes 8–12 weeks.
- 3–2 months out. Visa in process. EU citizens can start their 4–6 week visa step around now.
- 1 month out. Visa issued; book flights. At BHMS the first airport pickup is included in the fee.
- Arrival week. Pickup, move into the included accommodation, orientation — and the first academic semester begins.

For undergraduate entry at BHMS, the requirement is currently published inconsistently on bhms.ch: the BA programme page states IELTS 5.5, while the central Requirements & Intakes page and the FAQ state IELTS 5.0 — confirm the current figure with admissions before booking a test. The Postgraduate Diploma asks IELTS 5.0; the Graduate Certificate and MSc ask IELTS 6.0. A Preparatory English Programme exists for applicants below the required level.
Can international students work part-time while studying in Switzerland?
Not outside the programme. BHMS states that students requiring a visa to study in Switzerland may not work outside the internships included in their study programme. The internships themselves are part of the course, so they are permitted — three six-month paid placements across the bachelor.
How early should I apply before an intake?
Non-EU applicants should work about six months ahead: visas take 8–12 weeks to process, and you can only file once you hold a Letter of Acceptance.
