The hospitality management degree, level by level

Certificate, diploma, bachelor or master; online or on campus. What each one is for, what it costs, and the question most guides skip: will you graduate with real experience?

A hospitality management degree teaches you to run hotels, restaurants, events and tourism businesses: the business side (finance, marketing, people, revenue) and the operations side (rooms, front office, food and beverage). It comes in several levels, from a ten-week certificate to a one-year master's, with the three-year bachelor as the main route into management.

The level matters less than people think. What decides how useful a degree is on day one of your career is how much real work it puts on your CV, and whether that work is paid. Here's how the options compare.

What types of hospitality management degree are there?

Names vary by country, but most programmes fall into five levels. The table uses BHMS in Lucerne as the worked example, with its 2027 all-inclusive fees (tuition, accommodation, meals, health insurance and visa support).

LevelWho it's forLengthBHMS example, 2027 fee

In US dollars at the October 2026 rate (1 CHF ≈ US$1.21): Year 1 about US$48,000, the full bachelor about US$147,700, the MSc about US$50,500.

In the US you'll also see the associate's degree, a two-year qualification from a community college. The BLS lists it, alongside a certificate or a bachelor's, as one of the usual routes into lodging management.

Bachelor's in hospitality management: what you study

A good bachelor's moves from operations to strategy. At BHMS, Year 1 covers the operational base and ends with the Diploma in Business & Hospitality Management. Year 2 adds revenue management, front office and digital marketing and ends with the Higher Diploma. Year 3 is the BA in Hotel & Hospitality Management, awarded jointly with Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen (UK): 180 ECTS and 360 UK credits in all.

Each academic semester is followed by a six-month paid internship. That's the Swiss format: you don't learn hospitality in a lecture hall and then look for a job, you alternate. By graduation you have 18 months of paid experience. If you're not sure yet whether hotels are your thing, it also helps that BHMS students only choose between the BA in Hospitality and the BA in Global Business Management in the final year, after working for two different Swiss companies.

Can you get a hospitality degree online?

Yes, some universities offer online hospitality degrees, and for someone already working full time in a hotel they can make sense. Be clear about what you're buying, though. An online degree teaches the business theory well. What it can't give you is the part employers ask about first: time spent inside a working hotel, under pressure, with guests.

BHMS has no online option. Every programme is taught on campus in Lucerne or Zurich, with no distance or hybrid version, not even for part of a year. That's not stubbornness; half of each BHMS year is a paid job in a hotel, and that half is the point. If you can't relocate at all, an online degree is the honest choice. If you can spend a year or three in Switzerland, compare what you'd graduate with:

On campus in Switzerland: what it really costs

Swiss hotel schools aren't cheap, and you should plan on the full figure. At BHMS, Year 1 is CHF 39'700 all-inclusive for 2027: tuition, operating costs (health insurance, internship placement, visa and permit, airport pickup), accommodation in a shared apartment and meals. BHMS suggests about CHF 500 a month on top for personal expenses. The full fee breakdown for every programme.

The internships pay back part of it: BHMS publishes CHF 2'390 a month gross for placements in Switzerland, more than CHF 43'000 across the bachelor. Students who need a visa can't take side jobs, so treat that pay as an offset, not as the plan.

How to choose a hospitality management degree

  1. Who awards it? A school's own diploma, a university degree, or both. BHMS's BA, MSc and Graduate Certificate are dual-awarded with Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen (UK).
  2. Is work experience built in, and is it paid? One unpaid summer placement isn't the same as three six-month paid ones.
  3. Can you stop with something? At BHMS each year carries its own exit award: Diploma, Higher Diploma, BA.
  4. What does the fee include? Compare all-inclusive figures, not tuition alone.
  5. Where does it rank? One input, not the verdict. BHMS is #12 in the world for Hospitality & Leisure Management in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026; see the full QS list.

Degree questions

Straight answers

What is a hospitality management degree?

A university-level qualification in running hotels, restaurants, events and tourism businesses. It combines business subjects (finance, marketing, people management, revenue) with operations (rooms, front office, food and beverage). Good programmes add real work placements.

How long does a hospitality management degree take?

A bachelor's typically takes three to four years depending on the country. At BHMS in Lucerne it's three years, each year split into six months of study and a six-month paid internship, with an exit award after every year. A master's or postgraduate diploma takes about a year.

Can I get a hospitality degree online?

Some universities offer online hospitality degrees. BHMS doesn't: every BHMS programme is taught on campus in Switzerland, with no online or distance option. The reason is the format itself: half of each year is spent working in a hotel, which can't be done from home.

Is a hospitality management degree worth it?

It depends on the programme. The BLS says full-service hotels may prefer candidates with a bachelor's in hospitality or hotel management, but experience counts too. A degree that builds paid work experience into every year gives you both at once.

How much does a hospitality management degree cost in Switzerland?

At BHMS the 2027 all-inclusive fee is CHF 39'700 for Year 1, CHF 40'700 for Year 2 and CHF 41'700 for Year 3, about CHF 122'100 in total. That includes accommodation, meals, health insurance and visa support. The paid internships return more than CHF 43'000 gross over the three years.

Can I study hospitality management without a hospitality background?

Yes. Undergraduate entry at BHMS needs a high school diploma or equivalent, a minimum age of 17 and IELTS-level English. The Postgraduate Diploma accepts a bachelor's in another discipline, and the MSc accepts an undergraduate degree in any field.
